Amazon takes ‘grab and go’ to new level

Amazon will launch its first grocery store, Amazon Go, in Seattle next year and has released a video showcasing its unique ‘Just Walk Out’ shopping experience.

The online-turned-bricks-and-mortar retailer is offering a check-out-free shopping experience that is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning.

Amazon says it’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When customers’ shopping is completed, they can just leave the store. Shortly afterwards, Amazon will charge their account and send a receipt.

The 168sqm store is currently open to Amazon staff in beta mode and will be open to the public in early 2017. It ranges grocery essentials, well-known brands and ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh by on-site chefs and local kitchens and bakeries.
